Avelyn & Kellan

When Avelyn and Kellan described their country wedding on Vancouver Island to me, I couldn’t have been more excited. With vintage Harley Davidson choppers, a stunning retro wedding dress, and a square dance in a rustic country hall, it was a dream come true for someone who loves to photograph the non-traditional. This wedding delivered on all fronts.

Their request was simple: capture the day in my documentary photography style, with minimal posing. In my experience, that often means couples feel a bit camera-shy, but after some gentle persuasion, we added a few posed shots—and I’m so glad we did! These are now some of my favorite images from the day.

The day started at Kellan’s house, where he, his parents, and his groomsmen had spent the night. Some even slept in his vintage chopper workshop, surrounded by custom-built motorcycles. After capturing a few candid moments of the guys in this unique setting, I moved on to Avelyn and her bridesmaids at a cozy rental in Courtenay, just a short drive away. We kept things relaxed, focusing on the bride getting ready with her mother and bridesmaids. And, of course, I made sure to highlight Avelyn’s beautiful vintage wedding dress—perfect for her country-themed celebration.

The ceremony took place at Dove Creek Hall, a charming venue in the countryside of the Comox Valley, complete with a rustic, country vibe that fit their wedding perfectly. It was an idyllic setting for a true Vancouver Island country wedding, especially when paired with the couple’s Harley Davidson choppers and their vintage truck. The attention to detail was incredible—the motorcycles, the venue’s old-fashioned aesthetic, and the couple’s timeless style all came together beautifully.

Kellan arrived in style, riding in on his custom Harley chopper, followed by his groomsmen on their bikes. Avelyn made her entrance in the vintage truck, setting the stage for a ceremony full of love and laughter. To keep the day timeless and distraction-free, they asked guests to keep their phones tucked away, which only added to the country, unplugged feel of the day. Their dog, Winston, delivered the rings (adorable!), and after the heartfelt ceremony, we headed inside Dove Creek Hall for dinner and a true country wedding square dance.

One of the most enjoyable weddings I’ve ever shot, but if I had one lesson from the day—shooting in cowboy boots is definitely an experience! They aren’t exactly the quietest when you’re trying to sneak around for those candid shots!
